THE SEXUAL ASSAULT EXAMINER TRAINING: PEDIATRIC
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This comprehensive 40-hour online didactic pediatric sexual assault forensic nurse examiner training program is designed to broaden the expertise of registered nurses (SAE, SAFE, SANE, FNE) and other qualified health care professionals who currently provide or will be providing forensic evaluations on child victims of sexual assault and abuse.
The course content includes the role of the pediatric sexual assault forensic examiner, normal genital development in children, introduction to pertinent anatomy and physiology, ano-genital injuries, identification of trauma requiring immediate medical treatment, child interviewing, photography and colposcopy documentation, collection, handling and preservation of physical evidence, trace evidence and biological specimens, evidentiary chain of custody, physical assessment and management of the child victim, STD recognition and treatment, medical and forensic documentation, handling of the completed evidence kit, immunization assessment, pregnancy prophylaxis, drug facilitated sexual assault, post event follow-up referral procedures, crisis intervention, evidence contamination issues, perpetrator profiling, principles of confidentiality, forensic examiner ethics, courtroom dress code and preparation for the examiner's role in the justice system, including depositions and courtroom testimony.
CLINICAL INTERNSHIP: Precepted sexual assault examiner clinical competency experience is recommended for medical professionals (preceptorship is not required for non-medical professionals). Clinical internship is the sole responsibility of the student to arrange after the didactic course. The preceptor may be a physician, advanced practice nurse, or pediatric trained sexual assault forensic examiner. Instructors are available throughout the term of the course and will assist in linking students, if necessary, to professional resources within their own communities for additional learning.
Accreditation: The American Institute of Forensic Education is accredited as a provider of continuing education by California Board of Registered Nursing, CEP#: 14812.

OBJECTIVES: After completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the roles of the multidisciplinary forensic team including: sexual assault forensic examiner, law enforcement, prosecutors, child advocacy and community agencies.
- Discuss the primary responsibilities of the medical professional in the evaluation and treatment of child victims
- Understand the techniques for interviewing children who are in various developmental, cognitive and communication stages
- Recognize the indicators of child sexual abuse
- Understand collection, handling, preservation and storage of physical evidence, trace evidence, biological specimens and chain of custody procedures
- Identify the structures of the pre-pubertal male and female genitalia
- Meaningfully collaborate with law enforcement and child protective services personnel for counseling, support and advocacy services
- Interpret ano-genital findings found during an acute sexual abuse examination
- Describe and recognize findings indicative of sexual and physical assault
- Perform skilled physical assessments on child victims
- Recognize the importance of using body diagrams, written description, photography, and colposcopy to document findings
- Describe and recognize the genital and anal findings which are normal, and variations of normal
- Conduct forensic examinations on child victims, recognizing the importance in the detailed description of genital and other findings
- Have a better understanding of the forensic investigative interview process
- Recognize and treat sexually transmitted diseases in children
- Demonstrate competent discharge of child victims
- Discuss the sexual assault forensic nurse examiner ethical responsibilities
- Discuss appropriate courtroom dress code and conduct
- Have knowledge of the professional resources available to the sexual assault examiner's forensic practice
WHO MAY TAKE THIS COURSE: Registered nurses, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, advance practice nurses, and other qualified licensed health care professionals involved with sexual assault. It is beneficial, but not mandatory, that the student complete the adult sexual assault forensic examiner training prior to this course.
Non-medical participants such as victim advocates, social workers, law enforcement officers, prosecutors and other attorneys may attend. The goal for those attending as non-medical participants is to understand the importance of working collaboratively with experts in the field of sexual assault.
PREREQUISITES: Hold a full and unrestricted license as a registered nurse in country or jurisdiction of practice. Completion of an Adult SANE training is preferred, but not required. Licensure is not required for non-medical participants.

PRESENTATION METHOD: The Blackboard Learning System
TEACHING METHOD: This program is presented online with on-going instructor participation. There is an established time frame for completion of assignments, homework, research projects, and discussion forum participation. Lessons are supplemented by interactive quizzes, tutorials, and discussions. All assignments and homework must be submitted to the instructor via e-mail or digital drop box. Routine course guidance and instructional materials will be accessed online. A final examination will be administered interactively and can be accessed by the student within a specified time.
METHOD OF COURSE GRADING: The minimum passing score for the final examination is 70%. Retakes must be approved by the course instructor.

METHOD OF COURSE EVALUATION: After successful completion of the course study and examination with a passing score of 70%, an evaluation shall be completed and submitted to info@taife.com
CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION: Upon successful completion of the 40-hour online didactic education, the medical professional will receive a Certificate of Completion.
Non-medical professionals who successfully complete the didactic education will receive a Certificate of Completion.
Upon completion of the didactic education and clinical internship, participants may make application for local, state or national certification, including the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Certification, (SANE-P), offered by the Forensic Nursing Certification Board (FNCB). http://www.iafn.org/certification/certHome.cfm.
This training does not “certify” the forensic examiner to perform pediatric sexual assault exams. Satisfactory completion of the course indicates that the sexual assault forensic examiner has attended this child specific didactic education.
This course provides 40-hours of California BRN Continuing Education for registered nurses. Upon successful completion of the didactic education, a Certificate of Completion will be issued for the Pediatric Sexual Assault Forensic Nurse Examiner Training Program. Participants residing outside of California will need to contact their individual state's licensing board to verify and determine the California BRN applicability.
